The Florida Legislature’s passage of HB 7071 on March 14, 2022, provides a two-year sales tax exemption for consumer purchase of impact-resistant windows and doors. That exemption period runs from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2024. Information from the Florida Senate notes that retrofitting buildings with impact-resistant doors can help reduce damage caused by hurricanes. According to the nonprofit taxpayer research institute Florida TaxWatch, the $658 million tax cut package provides non-recurring relief for individual taxpayers.
PGT Windows and Doors of North Venice, Fla., writes on its website that aside from offering protection from extreme weather and debris, impact-resistant doors and windows also offer security, noise reduction, and UV protection. According to PGT, this means that products comprised of two pieces bonded with a clear interlayer, could see an increase in demand in the months and years to come in the Sunshine state.
A seven-day sales tax holiday for tools utilized by skilled workers in the trades made the cut as well. The holiday runs from September 3, 2022, through September 9, 2022. It applies to hand tools that sell for $50 or less, power tools selling for $300 or less, and associated batteries priced at $150 or less. The list of applicable items continues, with varying pricing thresholds, including work gloves and boots, safety glasses, tool belts, tool boxes, and more.
Also included is a 14-day disaster preparedness sales tax holiday, set to run from May 28, 2022, through June 10, 2022. The holiday applies to certain disaster preparedness supplies such as flashlights, tarps, coolers, batteries, and generators that fall under pricing thresholds specific to individual products.
