Video: 2 in custody after Highway 169 police chase
TULSA, Okla. — UPDATE (09/01; 7:33 p.m.) — Two people are in custody after a police chase that started at an Owasso Sam’s Club and ended in a crash on Highway 169 in east Tulsa.
Owasso Police Department Lt. Nick Boatman said a witness reported to police Thursday afternoon that a male suspect grabbed a woman’s purse while in the parking lot of the Sam’s Club near N 129th E Ave and E 96th St N. The witness told police the woman and suspect fought over the purse, but the suspect was able to get the purse and jumped into the passenger seat of a gold SUV that then sped off. Police said a woman was driving the SUV.
Boatman explained Owasso PD officers flooded the area, and one officer spotted the vehicle in question and attempted to stop the car. The vehicle was speeding southbound on Highway 169 at 100 mph.
Police said the suspect did not yield and lead officers on a chase southbound on Highway 169. Once the chase entered Tulsa, Owasso Police requested assistance from the Tulsa Police Department (TPD) and Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP). Before either agency could arrive, the suspect spun out and collided with a light pole and the center median barrier on Highway 169. The light pole fell directly on the top of a pursuing patrol car.
Both the driver and suspect fled on foot from the scene of the car. The man ran west, jumped a fence and entered a soccer field near 31st and Garnett. The officer chased down the man and was able to apprehend him. The woman jumped the Highway 169 barrier, crossed northbound traffic and tried to get into a bystander’s car at the northbound off ramp. Officers arrived at the scene and apprehended her as well.
Officers searched the vehicle and found a gun, illegal drugs, IDs and credit cards that didn’t belong to the suspects. Police also discovered the car was reported stolen out of the city of Tulsa.
Both suspects were taken to the hospital and checked out before taken to jail.
