Maersk is going to build its first low GHG emissions warehouse in Taulov, in Southern Denmark. The new 40,000-square-metres facility, built in collaboration with Taulov Dry Port, is planned to be in full effect by 2024. Its strategic position will allow for rail connections to the Port of Fredericia, Scandinavia, and Germany.

“We are pleased to announce our first green contract logistics warehouse in Denmark,” said Birna Odefors, area managing director of Maersk for Scandinavia. With this project, Maersk is planning to improve its fulfillment capability in Denmark since customers will have multiple transportation options.

The global shipping company is on a streak since, in just a few days, it revealed the construction of a second mega-warehouse in the broader region of Northern Europe/Scandinavia. Last week, Maersk disclosed its plans to build a new warehouse in Duisburg, which will have similar characteristics to the one in Taulov. For instance, both of them will be multimodal with direct rail access and provide end-to-end solutions integrating different transport modes in the company’s extended global supply chain.

The warehouse is expected to be built by following the BREEAM Excellent standards. This means that the building operations will not lead to direct emissions of GHG. As the company stated, “solar panels will be installed on the entire roof of the warehouse, and excess renewable energy produced will be fed to the grid”.

The building will be in a key location, considering that it will have connections to all types of transportation. “The Taulov facility also has a strategic position in Europe and will be a key asset to serve our customers as a deconsolidation point and add value by optimising transport modes with its port, rail, and road links,” Odefors commented. When it comes to rail, the new warehouse will provide connections to the North of Germany through Flensburg and to Scandinavia through Copenhagen and then Sweden.

Taulov Dry Port owns the commercial land and the logistic premises. The first leasing contract will expire in 12 years, with options to both extend and expand already in place. In fact, Maersk has an option to expand the warehouse to over 40,000 additional square metres. Taulov Dry Port will also be in charge of building the warehouse based on Maersk’s design.

Taulov Dry Port is a 900,000 square meters area established for logistics and storage facilities in 2017 by ADP A/S and PFA Pension, a Danish insurance company. ADP A/S is the owner and operator of the ports of Fredericia and Nyborg. It also operates the Port of Middelfart.
