A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Ankeny closed the freeway for several hours Wednesday.

The crash happened around noon Wednesday when a truck smashed into a bridge on First Street and caught fire, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

First Street was covered in debris, including the metal barrier from the Interstate above.

The crash flipped a cement truck in the northbound lanes and caused a backup for miles behind it.

Minor injuries were reported in the crash.

The northbound lanes of I-35 were closed at Exit 94 at 36th Street for some time.

Traffic was backed up for some distance over the noon hour.

All lanes of I-35 are now open, but Northeast 36th Street (eastbound) will be closed for an extended period of time, Ankeny police reported.
